Early Life and Background

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia was born on 5 May 2003 in El Palmar, a village in Murcia, Spain. He grew up in a family with a strong tennis tradition - his father Carlos Alcaraz González was a former professional player who reached the top 1000 rankings in the 1990s. The youngest of four brothers, Carlos began playing tennis at just 4 years old at the Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia, where his father worked as tennis director.

Junior Career and Early Promise

Alcaraz showed exceptional talent from a young age. He won his first ITF junior title in 2018 at age 15 and helped Spain win the Junior Davis Cup that same year. In 2019, he reached the quarterfinals of junior Wimbledon. His precocious skills caught the attention of former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, who began coaching Alcaraz when he was 15 at his tennis academy.

Professional Breakthrough

Alcaraz turned professional in 2018 at just 15 years old. He steadily climbed the rankings over the next few years, breaking into the top 100 in May 2021 at age 18. His big breakthrough came later that year when he reached the quarterfinals of the US Open, becoming the youngest player to do so in the Open Era. He capped off 2021 by winning the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Rise to World No. 1

2022 was Alcaraz's true breakout year. He won his first Masters 1000 title in Miami and his first Grand Slam at the US Open, becoming the youngest male player ever to reach world No. 1 at just 19 years old. In 2023, he added a second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, defeating Novak Djokovic in an epic final. His aggressive, all-court game and remarkable athleticism have drawn comparisons to the 'Big Three' of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

Playing Style and Personality

Alcaraz is known for his explosive, attacking style of play. He possesses tremendous speed and athleticism, powerful groundstrokes off both wings, and excellent touch at the net. His mental strength and composure under pressure belie his young age. Off the court, Alcaraz is known for his humble, friendly personality and close relationship with his family and team.
